The first edition of Major League Cricket (MLC) wrapped up on Sunday with the MI New York team triumphantly taking home the title. The match, held in Dallas, was against the Seattle Orcas, and served to further establish MI’s reputation for exemplary cricket prowess, as it added another trophy to its showcase.

The Seattle Orcas, batting first, set a formidable total of 183/9 in 20 overs, largely thanks to Quinton de Kock’s stellar 87 runs. The game’s momentum, however, took a drastic turn in the second innings. It was here that MI New York’s captain, Nicholas Pooran, took center stage, powering his way to a breathtaking 137 runs from just 55 balls, and spearheading his team’s seven-wicket victory.

Pooran’s remarkable inning was embellished with 13 sixes and 10 fours. Among the many standout moments was the 16th over of MI’s pursuit, where the West Indies wicketkeeper blasted Harmeet Singh for a whopping 24 runs, including a boundary and a sensational sixes hat-trick.

Pooran’s exceptional performance throughout the MLC 2023 not only won him the title of the tournament’s highest run-scorer, with a total of 388 runs, but his 137* also marked the highest individual score in this year’s competition.

It is noteworthy that during the chase, MI found themselves at one down for no runs. However, under such pressure, the captain fearlessly took control and steered his team to claim the inaugural title.

Looking back at the match, only de Kock managed to cross the 30-run mark for the Seattle Orcas. Trent Boult and Rashid Khan, the dynamic bowling duo from MI, effectively dismantled Orcas’ batting lineup, each claiming three wickets. Steven Taylor and David Wiese also contributed, each taking one wicket.

Despite an early setback, losing two wickets with Steven Taylor and Shayan Jahangir bowled out for 0 and 10 runs respectively, MI New York held firm. The indomitable Pooran continued his blitz, while Dewald Brevis and Tim David chipped in with 20 and 10 runs respectively.

From the Seattle Orcas, Imad Wasim and Wayne Parnell each claimed a wicket, but they were unable to slow the momentum of the victorious MI New York.
