The national cricket council is on the cusp of announcing India’s final 15 for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Sources reveal that the selectors finalized the roster shortly after the rain-hit clash against Pakistan on September 2.

Drawing from the existing pool touring Sri Lanka, the team sees familiar faces, with KL Rahul retaining his position. Although a minor injury delayed Rahul’s arrival in Sri Lanka, he’s bounced back from a thigh injury and is now match-ready. Fans can anticipate his performance in the Asia Cup’s Super Four stage. Following their dominant win against Nepal, India is geared up to take on Pakistan on September 10.

Though the BCCI is yet to make an official announcement, the squad composition is already generating buzz. Among notable changes, Sanju Samson, initially seen as a standby, has been left out, losing his spot to Ishan Kishan. Kishan’s stellar performance in the recent ODIs, punctuated by three consecutive fifties, makes a compelling case for his inclusion. His recent performance against Pakistan might even challenge Rahul’s position in the playing XI upon his return.

Two other significant exclusions are Tilak Varma and Prasidh Krishna. Varma, although picked over Yuzvendra Chahal for the Asia Cup, was on shaky ground. Meanwhile, Prasidh’s promising ODI journey hit a speed bump due to a persistent back issue, sidelining him for a considerable period. However, there’s a silver lining for Samson, Varma, and Prasidh – they are likely contenders for the backup positions for the World Cup.
