In an assertive display of solidarity, Ravichandran Ashwin fiercely defended Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma amidst a growing volley of criticism. The uproar stemmed from a series of sweeping changes instigated within the Indian squad during their recent three-match ODI series against West Indies. Ashwin, unswayed by the clamour, stood resolutely in support of his teammates, emphasizing the strategic nature of these revisions.

An impassioned Ravichandran Ashwin recently took umbrage at the barrage of criticism being levelled at the Indian cricket team’s management following its decision to rest Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the ODI series against West Indies. The seasoned off-spinner voiced his frustration at the negative public sentiment brewing over Rohit and Kohli’s absence, asserting strong support for coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit.

Ashwin pointed out the undue rush to place blame on the coach-captain pair without understanding the extent of injuries the team is grappling with. “The reaction post the second ODI loss was particularly baffling with many questioning why certain players participated while others sat out. Rohit and Virat didn’t feature in that match, with Rohit even demoted in the batting order in the first game, leading to a spirited debate about their involvement,” he expounded on a video on his YouTube channel.

The 36-year-old cricket veteran also shed light on the monumental expectations shouldered by the Indian team, with fans presuming victory as the default outcome every time the team steps onto the field. He expressed, “There was widespread astonishment at our defeat to a team that didn’t even secure a World Cup berth. It appears that many view India’s sole purpose in international cricket as being World Cup victors. We often regard ourselves as World Cup favourites due to the IPL’s influence.”

As Jasprit Bumrah gears up for a comeback, key players such as Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul remain in rehabilitation. Hence, Ashwin rationalizes the respite provided to Rohit and Kohli. He stated, “We have a slew of players on the mend at the NCA, with Bumrah returning after an extended break and Prasidh Krishna making a comeback. With this significant injury landscape, it seems some are quick to find fault with Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma, unjustly.”

Finally, Ashwin defended the strategic exploration of diverse player options ahead of the ODI World Cup, drawing from the team’s experience in the last T20 World Cup when the absence of Ravindra Jadeja and Bumrah and a dearth of fast bowlers hampered the squad. “It’s essential to probe different avenues and test various combinations before a major tournament such as the World Cup,” concluded the off-spinner, advocating for Dravid and Rohit’s strategy.
